UPDATED:

Voting for Proposition 11 is more than a baby step towards improving the way our state legislature works. Prop 11 removes the power legislators in office now have to design their districts to benefit themselves.

In 2001, the Legislature drew its own current district lines. The Democrats and Republicans working together, protected each and every incumbent. They drew crazy district shapes and made it harder for potential challengers. All of it was done behind closed doors and away from the public”s eye.

Does it matter? Well, politicians who run in safe districts, lip service to the contrary notwithstanding, need not be the least responsive to their constituents. So year after year, we get partisan gridlock and ineffective government.

Our county Democratic organization says to vote against Prop. 11. Shame! Our county Republican”s organization says to vote for Prop. 11. Good for them! The S.F. Chronicle said it so well, “A vote for Prop. 11 is a vote for democracy.”
