The Constitution gives the individual states the power to make rules and enforce methods of voting for the national office of president. With the “us and them” mind set of the two national parties, we have a hodge podge of manipulated methods of voting. This makes each secretary of state a powerful politico who usually has an agenda of their own. It gets worse as each precinct captain has an amount of autonomy on their own for observing and sitting rules.
A mail in vote as in Oregon would level the playing field and probably increase the volume. The voting cut off time could be adjusted to the time zones and no results posted until the election was decided.
