SAN FRANCISCO — Making her first varsity start, Lower Lake sophomore point guard Veronica Wilder scored a team-best 13 points as the Trojans opened the 2008-09 basketball season with a 48-42 non-league victory over Waldorf School in San Francisco.
Wilder, a backup as a freshman for the Trojans (1-0) last season, settled down as the game progressed, according to Lower Lake coach Andrew Carpenter.
“She actually said she was more nervous tonight (than last year) because she was the starting point guard this time,” Carpenter said.
Darlena White joined Wilder in double figures with 10 points.
Lower Lake led 13-8 after one quarter and 21-12 at halftime. Waldorf School cut the deficit to two points in the third quarter.
“They never took the lead,” Carpenter said. “I think our depth was the telling story.”
Carpenter said it was a typical first game, one full of mistakes.
“We did some things well and others not so well,” Carpenter said.
One of those things the Trojans didn”t to well was hit free throws — they were just 14 of 32.
