HAYWARD — Led by Charlie Coburn and James Lolonis, Upper Lake High School”s boys finished 14th in the Division V team standings on Saturday during the North Coast Section Cross Country Championships at Hayward High School.

Though no Lake County athletes finished high enough to advance to next weekend”s CIF State Championships in Fresno, the Upper Lake squad, in only its second year of existence, had the opportunity to see the area”s best runners up close and personal.

Coburn finished 36th in the varsity boys” race, completing the 3-mile course in 17 minutes, 44 seconds, while Lolonis was 42nd in 17:59. Other scoring members of the Upper Lake team were Ben Mullin, 63rd in 6:09; Michael Dolan, 72nd in 18:35; and Fwee Chao, 90th in 19:16.

Winner Steven Iglehart of Branson crossed the finish line in 15:37.

In the Division V girls” race, Upper Lake”s Ashley Burns came in 29th out of 108 runners with a time of 21:23.

Race winner Lucy McCullough of Marin Academy finished in 18:35.

Two Coastal Mountain Conference runners did earn berths in next weekend”s state meet. Skyler Thomas of Mendocino finished sixth in the Division V boys” race in 16:09, and Grace Hafner of Sonoma Academy was sixth in the Division V girls” race in 19:48.

The top seven finishers in each race receive medals.
