The past few weeks I have had the pleasure of working with several local businesses on Main Street in downtown Lakeport. But I have to tell you that my story could take place anywhere on Main Street today. We all know our economy is hurting on a national scale, but do you also know that our local economy is hanging on by a thread to keep afloat during these tough economic times? Do you have a favorite store that you enjoy in Lake County? You can bet that your favorite store could be in trouble.

In the next year, there will be many businesses that will not make it through these troubling times. So who is to blame? Who could possibly make a difference? Guess who. You and me! Remember the vote in Florida a few years back that was so close it took weeks before we knew who our next president was going to be? That tells you how important each and every one of us is, in controlling our future.

The past year with the inflation of our gas prices the country spoke by not buying as much gasoline. We think twice before going over the hill to shop and consequently guess what happened, the price of gas is dropping. I never thought it would happen. I filled up my tank last week and it cost $46.00 instead of $89.00. Wow!

So, consider this. The Christmas Season is upon us. Local businesses are hurting. Do we have everything we need here? Probably not. But I would guess that when you make your Christmas list, you could find many items right here. By doing so, you could be that person that might help your favorite store keep his doors open another year. Things will get better some day.

In the meantime, I urge you, no I beg you, to look for those unique and special items this year, that are often times more meaningful, from one of our own local businesses. Look at Main Street wherever you live. Help our local economy instead of the big department stores that have thousands of more people to draw from. You will get more personalized attention, possibly gift wrapping services for free, but more importantly, you will feel great when you leave your favorite store that maybe, just maybe you have made a difference.
