LAKEPORT — With an inside game to match its outside scoring ability this season, the Clear Lake High School varsity girls” basketball team could be in for a fun next few months, starting with a 63-37 victory over Esparto on Monday night in Lakeport.

Clear Lake (1-0) rolled up 40 points in the first half in its season-opening victory.

“We came out real strong in the first half,” Clear Lake coach Jennifer Goff said. “Kaila (Sterbank) was distributing the ball very well. When they came outside to guard us, we worked the inside game pretty well.”

Sterbank, a three-year varsity starter, scored 19 points to lead the Cardinals and sophomore center Jesse Sondag added 15 points in her first varsity game. Foreign exchange student Terry Colliva added nine points in her first and only game for the Cardinals (she”s headed back to her home in Italy).

“We”re definitely more well-rounded this year,” Goff said.

Colliva and Briana Butcher led the Cardinals with 10 rebounds apiece and Sterbank had a team-best eight steals.

Clear Lake returns to action Thursday against Champion Christian at 5:30 p.m. in the opening round of the Colusa Tournament.
