HEALDSBURG — In a game that was closer than the final score indicated, the Healdsburg Greyhounds spoiled Kelseyville”s season opener on Tuesday night, beating the Knights 67-50 in a non-league varsity boys” basketball game at Smith Robinson gymnasium.

“They hit a bunch of free throws there at the end when we had to foul,” Kelseyville coach Scott Conrad said of his team”s initial effort of the 2008-09 season. “There was a point in that game even in the fourth quarter when if a few things had gone our way, we might have snuck out of there with a win.”

Kelseyville used a 22-point second quarter to take a 34-33 lead into halftime.

“We had a great second quarter,” Conrad said. “I think we were pretty prepared. They were all really focused. I was really pleased.”

The Knights went cold from the field in the third quarter and didn”t score their first points until the final 90 seconds of the period, enabling Healdsburg to push in front 48-40 by quarter”s end.

Peter Wotherspoon scored nine of his team-leading 14 points in the first half for the Knights (0-1).

“He was tough to contain up top,” Conrad said of the junior guard.

Steven Gross-ner added 11 points and Mike Duman had eight points, nine rebounds and five steals for Kelseyville.

Kelseyville hosts Pinewood on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the opening round of the 37th annual Stokes Tournament.
