In response to the article by Terry Knight addressing wildlife issues, I would like to clarify these two statements. He states that regarding healthy wildlife, “you”re stuck” with a skunk, raccoon, or opossum and that our “one” federal trapper isn”t always “available. “

There are two Federal trappers; one located in Lake County and one in Napa County, however, they work in tandem assisting each other wherever the need may be. And unless they are in a state mandated meeting, tracking a bear that just broke into a home, or tracking a mountain lion that just destroyed a flock of sheep, they are always “available.” I know this because I take messages for them. They get little sleep but are diligent and dedicated to keeping Lake and Napa County safe. In FY 07/08, they removed from Lake County 121 major species which included skunks, raccoons, and opossums as well as made 72 service visits.

If you have a skunk, raccoon, or opossum problem, hide the cat food. If that doesn”t work, call us at the Agriculture Department, weekdays only, at 263-0217. We”ll take your information, give it to the trappers, and they will contact and assist you in removing the animal. We appreciate their hard work and service to our county.
