COLUSA — Clear Lake tied the game with two minutes remaining but ended up falling 42-37 to Sutter in a winner”s semifinal game at the Colusa Tournament on Friday night in Colusa.
Shut out in the first half, Clear Lake senior guard Kaila Sterbank scored all eight of her points in the second half, including two 3-pointers in the fourth quarter that brought the Cardinals (2-1) back even.
Sophomore center Jesse Sondag led Clear Lake with 12 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks, but the Cardinals” inability to generate much of an outside shooting game hurt them in the end.
“We couldn”t get our shots to fall, especially in the first half,” Clear Lake coach Jennifer Goff said.
Clear Lake plays Dixon for third place tonight at 6 p.m.

John Swett 35, Lower Lake 24
Talk about your scoring drought. The Lower Lake Trojans scored just four points in the second half ? getting one basket in each of the third and fourth quarters ? after opening up a 20-18 halftime lead against John Swett in the first round of the Berean Christian Tournament at Walnut Creek.
Amber Daniels scored on a putback on Lower Lake”s first possession of the second half and the Trojans (1-2) didn”t score again until Jessie Beckwith came off the bench and hit a shot with 48 seconds remaining in the game.
“We were playing a nice solid game, good tempo, in the first half,” Lower Lake Andrew Carpenter said. “But we couldn”t score in the second half. We missed all conceivable scoring opportunities.”
Darlena White”s seven points paced Lower Lake and Tashee Denson had five.
Hoopa 54, Upper Lake 45
The Upper Lake Cougars battled back from a 46-28 deficit after three quarters but couldn”t quite catch the Hoopa Warriors in a winner”s semifinal game at the Willits Tournament.
Upper Lake cut Hoopa”s lead to six points with a minute to play but couldn”t get any closer.
“We grew tonight as a team as far as thinking like basketball players in the fourth quarter,” Upper Lake coach Donnie Meri said. “They showed me a lot of grit coming back like they did.”
Ashley Arroyo scored 11 points, including three 3-pointers, and Katy DeVries also had 11 points to lead the Cougars.
In boys” action Friday:
Valley Christian 75, Upper Lake 69
Despite hitting 26 of 34 free throws, the Upper Lake Cougars couldn”t quite overcome 30 turnovers in an elimination-game loss to Valley Christian at the Redwood Classic in Boonville.
“I”ve never stayed in a game with that many turnovers, so I was proud of the kids for staying close the whole way,” Upper Lake coach Forrest Stogner said.
Trailing 42-31 at halftime, Upper Lake (1-2) pulled to within one point of Valley Christian on four different occasions in the second half.
“Every time we got it down to one we would turn the ball over,” Stogner said.
Upper Lake also lost four players to fouls in the fourth quarter, three of them starters.
Nick Palomo led the Cougars with 19 points, Brandon Mendoza added 18 and Kyle Coleman had 17 points and 12 rebounds. Palomo also had a double-double, pulling down 10 rebounds.
Middletown 62, Calistoga 37
Brett Humphrey and Dylan Galusha scored 10 points apiece and Dustin Peterson added nine as the Middletown Mustangs (1-1) picked up their first win of the season by beating the Calistoga Wildcats in the consolation semifinals of the St. Helena Tournament.
Middletown led 18-8 after one quarter and 37-12 by halftime, prompting coach Mike Mullin to empty his bench in the second half. Ten different Mustangs ended up in the scoring column.
John Swett 63, Lower Lake 49
As long as David Clark was in the game, the Lower Lake Trojans did just fine. But with Clark in foul trouble all night long, the Trojans fell to John Swett High School of Crockett in the first round of the Berean Christian Tournament at Walnut Creek.
Clark finished with a team-high 21 points despite sitting most of the second half in foul trouble, according to Lower Lake coach Marty Udy.
“When he was in there he was unstoppable,” Udy said. “But I think he probably only played a quarter and a half.”
Clark eventually fouled out in the fourth quarter, when John Swett pulled away to win the game.
Lower Lake trailed just 43-41 after three quarters.
“When Clark was out of the game we didn”t have an inside presence and that allowed them to extend out their zone,” Udy said. “When Clark”s out of the game, we”re extremely small.”
Andre Satterwhie and Paul Bailey had seven points apiece for the Trojans.
