KELSEYVILLE — Middletown High School center Kelsey Guzman scored 18 points and pulled down 19 rebounds as the Mustangs defeated the Fort Bragg Timberwolves 54-23 to improve to 2-0 in Stokes Basketball Tournament varsity girls” action at Kelseyville High School.
Guzman, a senior, played varsity ball as a freshman at Middletown but hasn”t played for the last two seasons. Now that she”s back on the court, the Mustangs have a pretty good 1-2 inside punch, according to Middletown coach Marnin Pyzer.
“Both Kelseys bat the ball back and forth to each other,” Pyzer said of Guzman and Kelsey Welton, who added 10 points. “I also have Emily Beckwith (six points) and she”s another good inside player.”
While Guzman missed two full seasons, Pyzer said she is doing well in the early going for the Mustangs (2-0).
“She has a very good shot, a nice jump shot and she elevates pretty well,” Pyzer said.
Middletown shut out Fort Bragg 9-0 in the first quarter and led 25-5 by halftime.
Jenny McGee scored seven points for the Must-angs, who play their final tourney game today at noon against winless Tulelake.
