LOWER LAKE — Almost.
While it was the goal of Lower Lake High School to have its new, state-of-the-art gymnasium open in time to host the 15th annual Record-Bee Hoop Classic, that won”t happen.
The round-robin basketball tournament featuring all of Lake County”s varsity boys” and junior varsity boys” teams tips off Monday at 3:30 p.m. in the old Carl Delgado gym, located next door to the new facility, which could be open in a few weeks.
The next-door change of venue means that the new gym dedication ceremony originally scheduled for Monday night will not take place. As a result, the late varsity game between Middletown and Lower Lake has been moved up from 8:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The remainder of the tournament schedule stays the same.
Tournament days are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. All teams take Wednesday off and each team also has a bye date during the tournament (see schedule at right). Special contests include the varsity coach 3-point shoot on Tuesday, and JV and varsity free-throw and 3-point contests on Friday. All other awards will be presented following the final game on Saturday.
All-Tournament teams will be selected in the JV and varsity divisions as determined by the vote of participating coaches. The Record-Bee will break any ties that occur.
The Hoop Classic is a fundraiser for the host high school”s basketball program. Entry fees offset the cost of officiating, while all gate receipts, concession sales and program sales are kept by the host high school. All tournament awards are purchased by the Record-Bee, which also prepares the programs.
As part of the Record-Bee”s coverage of the Hoop Classic, one page in each edition next week will be dedicated solely to the tournament as in past years.
