LOWER LAKE — One definition of an overpowering victory is when you outscore your opponent 28-7 in the first quarter. Another is when the other team all but concedes the game by putting in its reserves early in the second quarter.
That was pretty much the case Tuesday as the Middletown Mustangs, hitting on all cylinders, overwhelmed the Upper Lake Cougars 63-21 in the early junior varsity game at the Record-Bee Hoop Classic in Lower Lake. The Mustangs had a 45-14 lead by halftime and the game ended with a running clock after Middletown pushed its lead to 41 after three quarters.
Middletown improved to 2-0 in the round-robin tournament with games remaining against Kelseyville (Friday) and Clear Lake (Saturday). Upper Lake is 0-2 and finishes up with Lower Lake on Thursday and Clear Lake on Friday.
Bo Sheffer and John-Wesley Davis scored 14 points apiece to lead the Mustangs and Chris Oatman and Brian Holt added nine each. Yancy McCloud”s eight points paced Upper Lake.
Clear Lake 49 Lower Lake 21
In the late JV game Tuesday, Clear Lake looked sharp in its Hoop Classic debut as Steven Edwards” 17 points led the Cardinals to an easy win over the Lower Lake Trojans.
Clear Lake outscored Lower Lake 17-6 in the second quarter to open up a 26-13 halftime lead. After the Trojans moved to within nine points early in the third quarter, the Cardinals closed the period with a 15-2 run capped by Kyle Donald”s 3-pointer.
In the fourth quarter, Clear Lake reserves held Lower Lake”s reserves scoreless until Robbie Chen hit a shot with 1:20 left.
Lower Lake, led by E.J. Jermany”s 10 points, drops to 0-2 in the tournament standings.
