CLOVERDALE — Trailing 15-0 after one quarter, the Upper Lake Cougars rallied to within five points of St. Elizabeth late in the fourth quarter but ended up on the wrong side of a 44-38 decision on Thursday night in the opening round of the Cloverdale Tournament.

“You spot another team 15 points and it”s pretty rough,” Upper Lake coach Don Meri said.

Katy DeVries” 18 points paced the Cougars and Taryn Re had seven of her 10 in the fourth quarter.

In other action Thursday:

Arcata 42, Lower Lake 41

Lower Lake missed two shots in the final seconds and fell to Arcata in the opening round of the McKinleyville tournament.

Arcata scored a basket with 13 seconds remaining to go up 42-41.

Veronica Wilder”s 14 points paced the Trojans and Darlena White added 12 points and 13 rebounds.

Kelseyville 49, Ferndale 23

Amanda Muller scored 12 points and Skyler Olsen added 11 as Kelseyville beat Ferndale 49-23 in the opening round of the Fort Bragg Tournament.

Kelseyville outscored Ferndale 32-12 in the second half.
