REDWOOD VALLEY — A rollover crash killed a Laytonville teen and injured an Upper Lake man Tuesday night. The accident happened approximately two miles north of Redwood Valley on a portion of Highway 101 known as the Ridgewood Grade, according to California Highway Patrol officer Marian Holcomb.
Hugo L. Macias Jr., 20, was driving his 1994 Geo Tracker south on the highway, and was traveling down the grade at 55 to 60 miles per hour, according to a CHP press release. Witnesses said Macias suddenly veered right, off of the highway, and plummeted approximately 350 feet down a steep ravine, rolling several times.
Passenger Colby White Olson, 16, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Holcomb. The CHP release said Macias and Olson were both wearing seatbelts, but Olson was ejected during the Tracker”s descent.
Macias was flown by REACH helicopter to Santa Rosa Memorial with major injuries. No update regarding his condition was available on Wednesday.
