LAKEPORT – Kaitlynn Dione Hackbarth was welcomed into the world Thursday morning as the first Lake County baby to be born in 2009.

She was born to Lakeport residents Kirstie Chapin, 17, and Charles Hackbarth Jr., 21, at Sutter Lakeside Hospital in Lakeport at 11:07 a.m. on New Year”s Day. She weighed 9 pounds and 5 ounces and measured 23 inches long. This is her first child and despite the baby”s size, Chapin said the labor was quick and uncomplicated. She said she was excited to learn that her daughter was the first New Year”s baby in the hospital.

“It was fun and exciting,” Chapin said. St. Helena Hospital Clearlake staff confirmed no babies had been born at the hospital as of Friday. “Her due date was Dec. 31, so I guess she wanted to wait.”

Because Kaitlynn Hackbarth was the first baby born in the New Year, the staff of Sutter”s family birth center gave her parents a baby swing, teddy bear, two blankets, a silver spoon, a red beanie and a large, handmade stocking “to put her in and take her picture every Christmas,” according to nurse Sasha Reynolds.

Chapin graduates from Clear Lake High School in June, and said she plans to attend college and become either a doctor or a dentist. Charles Hackbarth Jr. works at Bruno”s Shop Smart in the meat department.

The chubby-cheeked newborn slept in her mother”s arms while the obstetrics staff and relatives looked on Monday morning. Chapin said there were no complications in the pregnancy or in the birth, and she planned to take her new daughter home Saturday.

“She did remarkably well – she was a real trooper – and dad was here coaching her all the time, and he cut the cord,” Reynolds said.

Grandfather Charles Hackbarth Sr. said his son called him at approximately 4:30 a.m. to let him know labor had begun.

“I”m very proud of them both, and I have a beautiful granddaughter,” Charles Hackbarth Sr. said.

Her godparents include her uncle, Jeremy Chapin, and her cousins, Kayla and Katerina Hikki. They welcomed Kaitlynn Hackbarth along with her grandparents, Denise Shaw, Laura Erickson and Charles Hackbarth Sr. Her great grandmothers are Cori Stoye and Vicki Headrick.
