LAKEPORT — Clear Lake High School”s one-two punch of Ryan Richardson and Corey Dillon flattened the Mendocino Cardinals 78-61 in a non-league varsity boys” basketball game on Friday night in Lakeport.
Clear Lake outscored Mendocino 47-30 in the second half after the two teams played to a 31-31 halftime tie.
“The first half was messy,” Clear Lake coach Glenn Wienke said. “The second half we pressed them a little, got some turnovers and were able to pull away.”
It was Clear Lake”s first game since beating Middletown on Dec. 20 to win the Record-Bee Hoop Classic.
Richardson finished with 34 points and Dillon added 20, including four 3-pointers, as the Cardinals improved to 8-4 on the season.
Ryan Grady had a big night on the boards for the Cardinals, according to Wienke, but had to leave the game midway through the fourth quarter with a twisted ankle.

Fort Bragg 56, Upper Lake 54
Fort Bragg rallied from a 54-51 deficit in the final seconds to beat the Upper Lake Cougars in a non-league game at Fort Bragg.
After tying the game at 54 by hitting a wide-open 3-pointer, Fort Bragg gained its margin of victory by sinking two free throws with 5.9 seconds remaining. Up to that point, the Timberwolves had made just one of their 14 free throws.
Upper Lake”s Brandon Mendoza drew a foul with the Cougars in the bonus as time expired, but he missed the front end of a one-and-one.
“We had that team beat,” Upper Lake coach Forrest Stogner said as the Cougars fell to 4-7 on the season.
Mendoza led the Cougars with 19 points and Kyle Coleman added 17 points and 10 rebounds. Nick Palomo had seven points and 10 rebounds.
St. Vincent 68, Middletown 34
Minus three starters, the Middletown Mustangs proved to be no match for St. Vincent in non-league boys” action at Middletown.
Middletown (5-6) was without Zach Strickler (illness) and the Harmyk brothers ? Johnny and Kyle (ill relative).
“We had a lot of turnovers,” Middletown coach Mike Mullin said.
St. Vincent had the game well in hand by halftime with a 41-20 lead.
John Hays led Middletown with 12 points and Dustin Peterson and Brett Humphrey added seven each.
Middletown had much more success in the junior varsity game as John-Wesley Davis scored 28 points in a 77-58 Mustangs victory. Bo Sheffer added 16 points, Chris Oatman had 10 points and 17 rebounds, and Jereomy Hoefer chipped in with eight points and five steals as Middletown improved to 8-0.
Varsity girls
Upper Lake 57, Fort Bragg 41
The gym heater wasn”t working at Upper Lake, so the Cougars generated their own heat by lighting it up from the field in their non-league win over Fort Bragg in varsity girls” action.
Upper Lake”s Katy DeVries scored a season-best 26 points as the Cougars stormed out to a 32-12 halftime lead.
“We were able to pass it down low to Katy and we were able to make some outside shots tonight,” Upper Lake coach Donnie Meri said.
Felicia Valdez added eight points as Upper Lake improved to 4-8 on the season.
“We played a really good first half, I thought,” Meri said.
Middletown 57, Clear Lake 35
A 39-20 first half propelled the Middletown Mustangs past the Clear Lake Cardinals in varsity action at the Lake County Tournament in Lower Lake.
Kelsey Guzman led a balanced Middletown attack with 12 points, Jenny McGee added 10, Elizabeth Wildt had nine and Alexis Rockwell eight for the Mustangs (6-4), now 1-1 in the tournament standings.
Katie Reynolds” 16 points, including three 3-pointers, powered Clear Lake, also 1-1 in the tourney standings. Kaila Sterbank and Jessica Asbury added seven points apiece.
Lower Lake, 2-0 in the tourney standings, can wrap up the title with a win tonight against Clear Lake at 8:30 p.m. (tourney schedule is on Page A9 under high school sports schedule).
JV division
Middletown 42, Clear Lake 28
Kaitlyn Agapoff scored 15 points and Jodie Mitchell had 10 as the Middletown Mustang JVs beat Clear Lake in the junior varsity division of the Lake County Tournament. Vanessa Tullos led Clear Lake with 14 points and Heather White had six.
Lower Lake 47, Kelseyville 41
Kelsie Shoffeitt scored 16 points as did teammate Danacka Whittington and the Lower Lake Trojans won their first tournament game by beating the previously undefeated Kelseyville JVs.
Liz Berry led the Knights with 14 points and Mary Jones added 11.
Thursday”s results
Lower Lake 44, Upper Lake 36
Veronica Wilder scored eight of team-lead 13 points during a pivotal fourth quarter as the Lower Lake Trojans beat the Upper Lake Cougars in varsity action on New Year”s Day during the Lake County Tournament at Lower Lake High School.
Lower Lake outscored Upper Lake 12-6 in the fourth quarter after taking a 32-30 lead into the final period. Wilder went 4-for-5 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter and she was 9-for-11 for the game.
Tashee Denson added 11 points and Darlena White had nine for the Trojans.
Katy DeVries” nine points paced the Cougars and Jessica Swaney had eight.
JV division
Upper Lake 44, Lower Lake 31
Rebecca Swaney and Katherine Edmonds scored nine points apiece and Angelina Gomez had eight as the Upper Lake JVs beat the Lower Lake JVs in New Year”s Day action at the Lake County Tournament.
Jonesha Beasley”s 19 points paced the Trojans.
Kelseyville 40, Upper Lake 22
Kelseyville built a 24-12 halftime lead and cruised past Upper Lake in the late JV game New Year”s Day at the Lake County Tournament.
Berry paced Kelseyville with 11 points. Gomez had 10 for Upper Lake.
