CLOVERDALE — Young, fast and aggressive are the Cloverdale Eagles, 42-27 winners over the Middletown Mustangs in a North Central League I interlock varsity girls” basketball game on Tuesday night in Cloverdale.
“They have no seniors, two juniors and the rest are underclassmen,” Middletown coach Marnin Pyzer said. “They have a lot of good, little athletes who are fast. They push the ball and they pressure you.”
While Middletown enjoyed a distinct height advantage, the Mustangs (7-5) had trouble getting the ball inside to center Kelsey Guzman, who still led the team with 14 points.
“Once they figured out Guzman, they were double- and triple-teaming her,” Pyzer said.
Middletown stayed close for a half, trailing 17-13 at the intermission, but the Eagles began to lengthen their lead while tiring out the Mustangs in the third quarter.
“They just wore us out, there”s really no other way to put it,” Pyzer said. “He (Cloverdale coach Rick Berry) was subbing freely the whole way. They played a good, solid game.”
While Guzman and Kelsey Welton (nine points) were able to generate some offense inside, Middletown”s perimeter game yielded very little.
“We had nothing from the perimeter,” Pyzer said.
