FORT BRAGG — Trailing 25-22 at halftime to the Fort Bragg Timberwolves on Tuesday night, Clear Lake High School varsity girls” basketball coach Jennifer Goff said she wasn”t impressed with the play of the Cardinals” defense ? and she let her players know it.

“They got a speech on playing more aggressively and playing strong defense,” Goff said.

The result?

Clear Lake limited Fort Bragg to seven points in the second half and beat the Timberwolves 48-32 in North Central League I interlock action at Lakeport.

“We made the adjustments we needed to make as far as the offense they were running,” Goff said. “We held them to seven points, so they did their job.”

Briana Butcher and Kaila Sterbank also did their jobs on offense, scoring 15 and 14 points, respectively, to lead the Cardinals (6-8). Sterbank also had a team-high six assists to go along with three steals.

“Kaila is a leader out there,” Goff said. “She really sets the tone. Her and Butcher worked really well together. They were right where they needed to be.”

Rylie Gabehart added six points and a team-high eight rebounds as Clear Lake snapped a five-game losing streak. Mori Jordan also had six points.

Clear Lake has a bye on Friday and returns to action Tuesday in Cloverdale, the NCL I South opener for both teams.
