WINDSOR — A split squad of Middletown High School wrestlers and Lower Lake”s Tyler Johnson took part in the Windsor King of the Mat tournament on Saturday at Windsor High School.

While a handful of Middletown”s younger wrestlers were taking part in the Clear Lake Invitational in Lakeport, the Mustangs” more experienced grapplers traveled to the more competitive Windsor tournament.

The Mustangs came away with thirds at 154 pounds and 191 pounds, and a fourth at 127 pounds.

At 154 pounds, junior Taylor Hoefer won all of his matches but one, a 5-2 loss to Sean Erickson from Miramonte. He bounced back by beating Adam Pulcipher of Dixon to capture third.

At 191 pounds, senior Jason Hill also lost only one match, falling to Mike Owen of Montgomery. He came back to overwhelm Billy Soto of Spanish Springs (Nevada) in the third-place match.

At 127 pounds, Nolan Tkachenko scored an upset by pinning the No. 2 seed and the No. 3-ranked 127-pounder out of Sac-Joaquin Section. He later lost to Tim Hankerson of Petaluma.

Lower Lake”s Johsnon, coming off a win at the Mustang Invitational in Middletown, finished fourth at 145 pounds. One of his losses was to Sam Worth of Miramonte, the third-place finishers at last year”s North Coast Section Championships.

“Tyler wrestled well and fit in real well with us for the day,” Middletown coach Troy Brierly said.
