PLEASANT HILL — Four Lower Lake High School wrestlers brought home medals from the College Park Frosh-Soph Tournament on Saturday in Pleasant Hill.
Three of the four medal winners — 112-pounder Brandon Painchaud, 130-pounder Jessie Taylor and 285-pounder Cody Torres — went undefeated.
“We were the only small school team there, so that was awesome,” Lower Lake coach Ed Fuchs said of Lower Lake”s medal count. “I took only seven wrestlers. It was pretty exciting.”
Torres and Taylor pinned all four of their opponents en route to winning their divisions. Painchad had three pins in his four matches.
Fuchs called Taylor”s win in the semifinals “the most amazing match I”ve ever seen.”
According to Fuchs, Taylor was trailing 17-15 midway through the second round when he pinned his opponent.
“It was non-stop action,” Fuchs said. “I don”t know how the scorekeeper kept up with the match with all the points being scored.”
Taylor and Painchaud are both freshmen.
Lower Lake also collected a second-place medal at 160 pounds, where David Jordan had two pins.
Another Lower Lake wrestler, freshman Jacob Grove, picked up his first high school win — by pin — at 145 pounds.
Lower Lake hosts Clear Lake and Kelseyville in a Coastal Mountain Conference tri-meet today at 5 p.m. at the new Lower Lake High School gym.
“It”s the first time we”ll be in there,” Fuchs said of the new gym.
