LAKEPORT — It”s really no surprise St. Helena is undefeated in the North Central League I South varsity girls” basketball race, one that reached the halfway mark on Friday night as the Saints pounded the Clear Lake Cardinals 68-27 at Lakeport.
“I definitely was im-pressed with what they brought here today,” Clear Lake coach Jennifer Goff said of the Saints (4-0 South), who are pretty much the complete package with solid inside and outside games and a bench that coach Will Densberger can go to — and often does — without losing much on the floor.
“There”s not much of a discrepancy between their starting five and the three or four girls he goes to off the bench,” Goff said.
Holle DePina led the Saints, now 17-1 overall, with 16 points, Maddy Densberger added 15 and Jamie Marshall and Kate Wignall had 10 apiece.
Clear Lake trailed 23-10 after one quarter despite scoring the game”s first four points — the first two coming on technical free throws because the Saints did not properly enter their starters in the scorebook.
“From there on it was uphill,” Goff said.
The Saints, who shot only two free throws, took a 62-23 lead into the fourth quarter. Clear Lake (1-3, 7-11) went 11-for-17 from the line.
Kaila Sterbank and Briana Butcher led Clear Lake with 10 points each.
