KELSEYVILLE — The Willits Wolverines kept their North Central League I North title hopes alive while eliminating the Kelseyville Knights from the race with a 61-48 victory Friday night during varsity girls” basketball action at Kelseyville.
Willits improved to 4-2 in the North standings, 1 ? games behind Middletown (5-0). Kelseyville dropped to 2-4 and 12-11 overall.
The Wolverines took a 29-27 lead into halftime and then pulled away with a 23-13 third quarter.
“They had a lot of fastbreaks,” Kelseyville coach Caitlin Andrus said of the Wolverines.
Willits center Ceara Snyder started most of them with her defensive rebounding and passing ability. Her outlet passes were on the mark and the Wolverines kept beating the Knights down the floor, according to Andrus.
Snyder finished with 16 points, complimenting a Willits attack that also received 15 points from Bessie Foltz and 14 from Kellie Arreguin.
“We were trying to box her out with three people,” Andrus said of Snyder. “She even hit a 3-pointer.”
Kelseyville had the lead a handful of times during the first half.
“My girls played hard,” Andrus said. “That”s a lot of losses we have, but the girls keep fighting. They”re not giving up.”
Monique Santana”s 12 points, all on 3-pointers, paced the Knights. Kendra Schwegerl added eight points and a team-best 11 rebounds, Amanda Mueller had eight points, and Ashley Mueller finished with six points and seven rebounds.
“Schwegerl was all over the boards,” Andrus said.
Andrus also praised the play of the Wolverines.
“They cut across the key well, they rebound well, they”re just a good team,” she said.
Kelseyville is home Tuesday to play Lower Lake.
