POINT ARENA ? Upper Lake High School scored eight runs in the first three innings and cruised past the Point Arena Pirates 9-2 in a non-league varsity baseball game on Tuesday in Point Arena.
“We started off hitting really well,” Upper Lake coach Greg Smith said of the Cougars” 8-0 lead after three innings. “Then our bats cooled off like the weather over there.”
Devin Callen worked 4 2/3 innings for the victory and reliever Gerald Thomas pitched 2 1/3 nearly perfect innings to close it out, including a bases-loaded strikeout in the bottom of the fifth to get Callen out of a jam.
“He just threw strikes,” Smith said of Thomas, who didn”t allow a hit or issue a walk.
Ben Raetz went 2-for-3 with a double as Upper Lake improved to 2-5. Anthony Driscoll and Brandon Bills drove in two runs apiece.
Upper Lake plays at Esparto on Thursday at 4 p.m.
