POTTER VALLEY — The game ended not with a bang but with a whimper on Thursday as the Potter Valley Bearcats scored the winning run on a passed ball to cap a three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning and beat the Kelseyville Knights 8-7 in a non-league softball game at Potter Valley.
“It was a classic coaching nightmare,” Kelseyville coach Greg Giusti said. “We played down to the level of the competition.”
Kelseyville scored twice in the top of the seventh to push in front 7-5 only to watch the Bearcats win it in the bottom half.
“Our defense was horrible,” Giusti said. “We spent the last two innings throwing the ball around.”
Losing pitcher Sabrina Lyon struck out eight and walked two in 6 1/3 innings. The Knights supported her with 15 hits, but struggled with runners in scoring position.
“We left a lot of people on base,” Giusti said.
Ashley Mueller went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a RBI for the Knights (1-5), Skyler Olsen went 3-for-4 with a double, and Lyon went 3-for-4 with a RBI. Sarah Johnson added a double and triple in four official at-bats and drove in a run.
