MIDDLETOWN — The stage is set for a battle of Lake County”s top two tennis teams.

Middletown High School beat St. Helena 4-1 on Monday during a Coastal Mountain Conference match in Middletown to raise its season record to 6-0, setting up a showdown today in Kelseyville where the undefeated Mustangs face the also-6-0 Knights.

“It”s going to be interesting,” Middletown coach Marc Morita said of a battle of unbeatens.

Interesting was something Middletown”s match against St. Helena was not. Middletown won four matches in straight sets. The Mustangs” lone loss came in No. 2 singles where Kyle Jimenez rallied to beat Jeanine Zolczynski 4-6, 7-5 and 10-5 (a 10-point tiebreaker was held in lieu of a standard third set).

“She”s been battling the flu,” Morita said of Zolczynski, who has been less than 100 percent because of illness for the last week.

In other singles action, Miriam Lane made quick work of Lucas Walter in first singles, 6-0, 6-1, while Tasha Gibbs beat Kenzie Fetzer 6-1, 6-4 in third singles.

Doubles action saw Chase Mannisto and Jason Candelario beat Hillary Hoppe and Kiera Louttit 6-2, 6-4, and Will Phelps and Gerry Espinoza defeated Chelsea Tipp and Chelsea Hoff 6-0, 6-0.

Morita said the hard work of his assistant coaches, Vic Wroobel and Cia Dedmon, has been a great help to both himself and the team this season.
