Regarding this country”s current economic crisis and the shortage of funds to solve our problems, surely we can temporarily suspend further expenditures for the space program. This is a “frill” that our country can little afford at this time. When a family is faced with an economic setback, the first items eliminated from the budget have to be the extras or the higher priced necessities.
Providing good education for our children, adequate health care for all citizens and relief for the homeless (including many who have lost a home through foreclosure or job downturn) should take priority over the “what-ifs” in outer space. Until and unless we can solve these most basic problems here on earth, what right has we to expand such ineptitude into an uncertain future? Without the benefits listed above in education, health care and basic housing, who will be left on earth to carry on an over-ambitious expansion into the unknown?
