PETALUMA — To use a tennis metaphor, the St. Vincent Mustangs held serve on Thursday during a Coastal Mountain Conference South golf match at their home course, the par-72 Adobe Creek Golf Club in Petaluma.
In the process, St. Vincent cut Kelseyville”s lead in the South to just one game with a 431-444 victory. Rincon Valley Christian came in third with 480, Middletown was next at 490, St. Helena had 498, Tomales was incomplete (fewer than five golfers) and Calistoga”s squad never showed up on the wind-swept afternoon.
“It was a four-club wind,” Kelseyville coach John Berry said of the gusty conditions, which turned slices and hooks into a mega-adventure.
“The wind either helped or hurt depending on which direction you were going,” Berry said. “If you sliced or hooked the ball, it (the wind) magnified it. It was a tough day.”
St. Vincent”s low five scorers all shot in the 80s as the Mustangs improved to 27-3 in the South standings and Kelseyville slipped to 28-2.
“It didn”t surprise me that St. Vincent played well,” Berry said. “This is their home course.”
Rincon Valley Christian”s Ty Cazet had the low round of the day, a 5-over-par 77, and Middletown”s Blaine Ruggio carded a 79. Nick Schaefer and Tyler Drake led Kelseyville with rounds of 82, and St. Vincent”s Connor Brown finished with 83.
Schaefer had the only two birdies for Kelseyville.
