CLOVERDALE — Not even a Middletown triple play could hold back St. Patrick/St. Vincent of Vallejo in a non-league softball game on Thursday during opening-round action at the Cloverdale Tournament.

St. Patrick/St. Vincent blanked the Mustangs 7-0 behind a Paige Gomez two-hitter. The Bruins nursed a 1-0 lead into the fifth inning when they broke the game open with a six-run rally.

Middletown”s triple play took place in the top of the third with St. Patrick/St. Vincent runners at first and second. Shortstop Holly Hough made a diving catch of a line drive and flipped the ball to second baseman Jessica Roush, who stepped on the bag to double off the runner. Roush alertly threw on to first base, where Alicia Siri stepped on the base ahead of the runner, who was moving on contact.

It”s the first time this season St. Patrick/St. Vincent (11-1) has won a game without 10-running an opponent.

Siri and Lindsey Silva had the only hits allowed by Gomez, who struck out nine and walked one. Losing pitcher Jen Emberson also went the distance, striking out one and walking one.
