KELSEYVILLE — One victory shy of a perfect Coastal Mountain Conference campaign, the Kelseyville Knights shut out the Clear Lake Cardinals 5-0 on a Tuesday that was anything but spring-like unless you consider rain, hail and gusty wind appealing in mid-April.

“It made for some really interesting tennis,” Kelseyville coach Jeff McLaren said. “The wind was playing real big tricks with the ball.”

Kelseyville has already clinched a tie for the CMC title and can wrap up the undisputed championship with a victory on Friday in Middletown, where the host Mustangs will be looking to secure a share of the title themselves with a win. Kelseyville prevailed 3-2 when the teams met March 31 in Kelseyville.

“We”re looking forward to the match,” McLaren said.

Against Clear Lake, the Knights won four of the five matches in straight sets. The two best battles were in first singles, where Moses Kuzu beat KC White 7-6 (7-0), 6-2, and in No. 1 doubles, where David Ferrario and Andor Benyei rallied for a 6-7 (7-3), 7-5, 10-8 win over Tony Valdez and Hayden Gilbert.

In other action, Stuart Davy beat Nate Seacrest 6-2, 6-4 in second singles, and Luke Kriken beat Humberto Perez 6-0, 6-0. In No. 2 doubles, Glenn Mostin and Alex Stempe were 6-1, 6-2 winners over Claire Mansell and Darcy McCarrick.

In exhibition singles, Kelsey-ville”s Steven McQueen beat Jeffery Mulligan 6-1.
