ST. HELENA — The St. Helena Saints broke open a close game with a seven-run inning in the bottom of the fourth and went on to beat the Upper Lake Cougars 11-5 in the North Central League I South opener for both of these varsity baseball teams on Monday in St. Helena.

St. Helena (1-0) took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the fourth.

“We played solid except that inning,” Upper Lake coach Greg Smith. “We made three errors in the inning and probably had two or three misplays that weren”t errors.”

The Saints batted around in the fourth.

Upper Lake (0-1, 3-10) scored twice in the fifth and sixth innings to close to 11-5.

Losing pitcher Devin Callen went 3-for-4 with a RBI and Lance McCloud went 2-for-4 with a RBI and three stolen bases for the Cougars. Gerald Thomas also had two hits.

Callen worked the first 3 1/3 innings, striking out five and walking five.

Upper Lake travels to Lakeport on Friday to play Clear Lake at 4 p.m.
