ST. HELENA — Minus five of her players, three of them starters, Upper Lake High School softball coach Kelly Coburn watched the Cougars drop their North Central League I South opener to St. Helena, 17-7, on Monday afternoon in St. Helena.
St. Helena (1-0) had a 10-1 lead after three innings. The Saints scored three times in the bottom of the sixth to go up 17-7, at which point the game was called because of the 10-run rule.
Jackie Lovrin, the first of three Upper Lake pitchers, took the loss. She struck out three and walked four in four innings. Lovin led the Cougars” offense with two doubles and a RBI in three at-bats. Laura Wold went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Sierra Coleman and Ashley Arroyo each went 1-for-3 with a double and a RBI.
The missing players were attending an FFA convention in Fresno.
