Zappelli was driving a blue 2002 C-1500 Chevrolet truck west on Red Hills Road approximately a mile west of Highway 29 when he crossed double-yellow lines and collided head-on with an oncoming red 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by Martin, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). Both drivers were flown by helicopter to Santa Rosa Memorial.
According to CHP officer Steven Tanguay, a witness said Zappelli was traveling at least 60 mph at the time of the crash. Tanguay said it is unknown why he lost control of the truck.
