MIDDLETOWN — An outfield collision between Middletown High School center fielder Brianna Doyle and right fielder Lindsey Silva led to the forfeiture of the Mustangs” North Central League I North softball game against the visiting Fort Bragg Timberwolves on Tuesday.

Doyle and Silva were knocked unconscious after making contact and hitting the ground hard while trying to chase down a fly ball hit in the right-center field gap in the top of the fourth inning.

Silva, 17, regained consciousness almost immediately but Doyle, 15, was out an estimated five to 10 minutes, according to Middletown High School softball coach Lisa Rogers.

“Lindsey”s foot collided with Bri”s head,” Rogers said. “And then they both hit the ground hard.”

Doyle was transported by REACH helicopter to the U.C. Davis Medical Center, where she was listed in good condition Tuesday night. Silva was taken to St. Helena Hospital Clearlake, where she was treated and released.

Middletown forfeited the game to Fort Bragg 7-0.

“If a team chooses not to continue, it”s a forfeit,” said umpire David Harkavey, who worked the contest along with umpire Jim Farenbaugh. “I talked to Lisa and she said they couldn”t continue. She made the right decision.”

“There”s no way we could keep playing after that,” said Rogers, who was on her way to the U.C. Davis Medical Center to check Doyle”s condition.

Fort Bragg was leading the game when play was halted.
