By Arlin Pischke ? letters to the editor

The John W. Andress letter, “Keep the Statue of Liberty standing,” on April 23 is one of the best letters you have ever published in your paper. It could have also been captioned “Stand up for America.”

The word “American” is not a part of a hyphenated word, as French-American, German-American, Afro-American, Mexican-American, etc. You are either an American or you are not.

As expressed by Mr. Andress, the previous immigrants became Americans upon arriving in America, they were no longer French, German, Dutch, or Irish. They came here legally, learned the English language, worked hard, and if they waved a flag, it was the Star Spangled Banner (Old Glory) ? the American Flag!

Next month on Memorial Day we will remember the sons and daughters of those early immigrants who gave their all for the United States of America. They truly became Americans without hyphenation!
