Prominent Lake County attorney Stephen D. Tulanian, 58, died on Saturday following heart complications. He practiced criminal law in Lake County since 1981.

According to Lake County Sheriff”s Captain James Bauman, results of an autopsy indicate that Tulanian died of acute cardiac ischemia and coronary insufficiency. Colleague and friend Attorney David Markham has agreed to assist Tulanian”s clients in transition.

“I had worked with Stephen for several years and am familiar with many of his cases. I had the utmost respect for him as an attorney and as a friend and I will miss him,” Markham said. “I will be assisting his clients in any way I can. They will have to get new attorneys, obviously, but I will have all of his case files in order to pass them along to new representation.”

Markham said that he would gladly take any calls from Tulanian”s clients regarding the transition. His office can be reached at 263-7080. Furthermore, calls to Tulanian”s number, 994-7676, are being redirected to Markham”s office.

Tulanian was a 1972 graduate of UC Berkeley and graduated from the University of San Francisco Law School in 1976. He reportedly passed his Bar Exam on the first attempt and began practicing law in the private sector in 1977. He appeared in Northern California courts in more than 15 different counties including the United States District Court in San Francisco.

Tulanian specialized in criminal defense and participated in more than 200 jury trials in his 32 years of practice. According to his attorney profile, Tulanian won the first Three Strikes case filed in Lake County. Additionally, he reportedly won the first medical marijuana defense case tried in Lake County.
