LAKEPORT — Cloverdale High School”s Mitch Delfino tossed a two-hitter, struck out 12 and didn”t walk a batter on Wednesday as the Eagles shut out Clear Lake 5-0 in a North Central League I South varsity baseball game at Lakeport.
Delfino, who will be playing for the Cal Bears this time next season, surrendered a long double to Ryan Hansford and a single to Brian Edwards, the extent of Clear Lake”s offense against the standout pitcher.
Cloverdale improved to 5-0 in the South standing with the victory and has three games remaining.
Pitching well in defeat for the Cardinals, now 2-3 in the South and 11-7-1 overall, was Christian Coddington, who allowed seven hits and three runs in the first six innings before giving way to reliever Ryan Richardson. He struck out three and walked four.
“He did a good job, we just didn”t pick him up offensively,” Clear Lake coach Paul Larrea said.
Coddington had issued only six walks all season going into the game.
“They make you throw a lot of pitches,” Larrea said of the Cloverdale batters.
Delfino helped his own cause, going 2-for-2 with two RBIs.
Noel McCormack turned an unassisted double play at shortstop for Clear Lake in the top of the seventh.
Clear Lake suited up only 11 players for the game, including four sophomores and a freshman.
