LAKEPORT ? Sutter Lakeside Hospital hosts its first-ever Health and Wellness Expo Saturday at the Wellness Center on the hospital”s North Lakeport campus.
Attendees can sample activities like yoga, Pilates and tai chi while children in second through sixth grades can explore all manner of sports, activities and healthy food at the “Find Your Fun Expo.” The all-day expo also offers a wide range of health screenings, information booths, vendors and internationally renowned keynote speakers. It will run from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
“The expo represents the final step in Sutter Lakeside Hospital and Center for Health coming of age. This is who we are. This is what we offer our community. We offer wellness and illness care and it”s all integrated,” Wellness Pathways owner and Exposition Team Chairwoman Leslie Lovejoy said.
Screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol, respiratory health, balance and biofeedback are available throughout the day. Classes are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The topics include acupuncture, parenting, cooking, relationships, healthy aging and Tibetan sound healing, among others.
A brochure containing schedules and descriptions of each class is available at www.sutterlakeside.org. For more information about the expo or to register for keynote speaker sessions, call the Sutter Lakeside Hospital Wellness Center at 262-5171.
Pre-registration and a $15 fee are required for two sessions with keynote speakers, who will also be available for book signings at the Wild About Books booth. Dr. Fred Alan Wolf, a theoretical physicist, will give an 11 a.m. presentation titled “Be the Change: Mastering the Quantum Physics of Life.” Dr. Joan Borysenko, a medical expert regarding the mind/body connection, will give a 5 p.m. lecture titled “The Wisdom of the Heart.”
The hospital”s new chief administrative officer, Siri Nelson, will speak during opening comments at 8:30 a.m. She started at the hospital Monday and said she looks forward to meeting the community at the expo.
Spaces are filling up in the children”s expo, according to Christine Petty, fitness coordinator for the Healthy Kids are Contagious Program. Coaches, counselors and middle-school leaders will be available to guide children through activities that include, sports, skateboarding, swimming, martial arts and a blindfolded food sampling game, among others.
“Kids get to try something they have never tried, and hopefully be inspired to start doing that. One of our goals is to help them develop an active lifestyle ? and the first step is to find something they love to do,” Program Supervisor Carrie McClure said.
Children must be pre-registered. The deadline to register children is today at 4 p.m. The children”s expo runs from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. All-day registration costs $25, half-day registration costs $15 and scholarships are available. Call McClure at 262-5093 for more information.
The Family Wellness Center held conferences for approximately the past six years that required pre-registration, according to Lovejoy. The new exposition format this year means attendees can come and go at will.
A team of Sutter Lakeside employees and contractors coordinated the exposition. The fresh approach has attracted plenty of interest, according to Nicole Grammer, a team member and wellness and development supervisor at the Wellness Center.
“We”ve got groups coming from Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico, and the feedback is excellent,” Grammer said. “With the expo style, and having the Healthy Kids piece, the parents can come for a couple of hours and take the classes they are interested in.”
