MARIN — Kelseyville High School”s golf season and the stellar career of four-year veterans Nick Schaefer, Jonathan Bridges and Hipolito Perez came to an end Monday during the North Coast Section Tournament of Champions at the par-71 Meadow Club in Marin.

The top three teams in the 20-team field and the four lowest-scoring individuals who are not members of the top three teams advance to next week”s NorCal Championships at Butte Creek in Chico.

Kelseyville finished 16th in team scoring with 443. Cardinal Newman of Santa Rosa topped the field with 381, Marin Catholic of Kentfield came in second on its home course with 390, and DeLaSalle of Concord was third with 391.

Also moving on to the NorCals were individual Johnny Baxter of Amador Valley, Justin Haley of California High School and Andy Clayton of Eureka, all with rounds of 71, and Lawrence Fu of Piedmont with 73.

Bridges led Kelseyville with a round of 82 that included three birdies. Schaefer was next at 83, Tyler Drake finished with 85, Perez had 94 and Wyatt Ferrell carded a 99.

“We were competitive I felt,” Kelseyville coach John Berry said. “But the course had difficult greens. You”d putt the ball and watch it roll eight feet by the hole. It reminded me of the greens at Augusta.”

The Knights did a good job hitting greens in regulation, led by Schaefer, who did so 13 times.

“I thought it was a great setting for them to play their final match,” Berry said of his talented trio of seniors, who led the Knights to another Coastal Mountain Conference South championship this season. “They agreed it was best course they”ve played.

“It was a neat year for me and a good experience for the kids,” Berry said of completing his 27th prep season.

“I still really like doing it,” Berry said. “The golf part is great, but the travel beats you up.”
