Can we avert World War III?

By Norman Fleishman ? letters to the editor

The aim of averting “world war” in our advanced “nuclear age” is a goal that the majority of nations accept and apply themselves to, at the present time. There is no way to know how much of a destabilizing force ? the death of many millions ? at once ? would be to the continuance of civilization.

Our developing media (I had the honor and the opportunity to teach “mass media” for many years at Mendocino College) can be a potent resource for public education; media is increasingly global and synergistic; how much more collaboration is needed for effective, creative cooperation on planetary survival? (Good topic for a conference!)

With more nations obtaining nuclear weapons, with shortages and pollution growing, with anger of various sorts (and wars) growing ? doesn”t it seem obvious ? that to avert WW III ? conflict-resolution must be more widely and effectively taught ? what about in kindergarten? Education ? rather than memorizing what we (the possessors of ultimate knowledge) want repeated ? versus “bringing out” (“educing”) the special talents of that person (who cannot be duplicated!) needs special support for summoning and gleaning, in the emerging earthling ? the extraordinary powers of resolving differences with others ? we could not be more in need of them now!
