LAKEPORT — Local veterans will be able to ride the bus for free to view the Moving Wall at the Lake County Fairgrounds.

The Moving Wall is a half-size replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. It arrives Thursday, June 11, and will be assembled in place at the Lake County Fairgrounds, 401 Martin St. in Lakeport.

The opening ceremony takes place at 9 a.m. Friday, June 12, and will be accessible 24 hours per day until the closing ceremony on Monday, June 15. This will be the Moving Wall”s only Northern California stop on its tour in 2009.

At its meeting on Wednesday, May 6, the Lake Transit Authority (LTA) voted to approve free bus fare for veterans who are attending the Moving Wall. The LTA also voted to extend bus service hours on June 12, 13 and 14 in the Lakeport area.

Dean Gotham and Daniel Davi with Vietnam Veterans of America, chapter No. 951, requested free fares and extended services in order to encourage veterans to come to the Moving Wall. Gotham added that by providing free fares, Lake Transit would be a sponsor of the Moving Wall.

The motion carried unanimously to approve free bus fares and to extend bus services for veterans attending the moving wall. In order to receive the free fares veterans must only self-identify; they do not need to show an I.D.
