LAKEPORT — You don”t have to travel to Spain ? or even to San Francisco or Sacramento ? to enjoy the tantalizing Spanish appetizers known as “tapas.” KPFZ 88.1FM, Lake County”s only non-commercial community radio station, will be holding a “Tapas Beach Party” from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 14, at the Lakeport Yacht Club, 15 Fifth St.

“Tapas are very popular in Spain and elsewhere,” says Julie Hoskins, host of “The Culinary View” on KPFZ. “There are many, many different types of tapas. People can socialize while ?grazing” on a wide assortment of delicious appetizers.”

Hoskins, who runs the catering service Chic le Chef in Middletown, will prepare the tapas for the event. “Spanish food should not be confused with Mexican food,” she says. “Spanish cuisine uses spices like saffron and smoked paprika and is not particularly spicy.”

Legend has it that tapas originated as slices of bread or meat that patrons of taverns in southern Spain put over their glasses of sweet sherry to keep fruit flies out. Over time these covers, or “tapas” in Spanish, evolved into the small plates of tasty morsels that we enjoy today.

Along with the tapas at the event will be other appetizers, a dessert buffet and a complimentary glass of sangria or other beverage.

Entertainment will be provided by C&D Karaoke with Cathy and Dave.

Tickets are $20 ($17 for KPFZ members) and $17 in advance, available at Watershed Books, 305 N. Main in Lakeport, and Wild About Books, 14290 Olympic Drive in Clearlake.

The event is sponsored by Herb Gura, Self Help Law Center; Affordable Attorney Advice, Chloe”s Softwater Pool Services; Deborah Bielenburg, Healing Extension; and Steve and Catherine Elias. All proceeds go to KPFZ operating expenses. For more information, call 279-4272.
