We really didn”t need the “California Statewide Local Streets and Roads Needs Assessment” to tell us that the roads in Lake County are in bad shape. But, it was a little surpris?ing that the recently completed two-year report ranked Lake County roads as the absolute worst in the state.
The assessment classifies roads with a pavement condition index (PCI). A PCI of 68 is considered to be “at risk.” Lake County was at the bottom of the list with a rating of some?where between 25 and 49. There were four other counties in that same category, but they apparently had ratings higher than Lake County.
It”s a shame that a county that stakes its reputation and a huge part of its economy on tourism has allowed the roads that help transport all the tourists and residents, as well, from place to place in this beautiful area to deteriorate to such a deplorable condition.
Now, with the state of the economy, will it be possible for Lake County to improve its roads and at least make an attempt to rise out of last place in the state? It would seem to be almost an impossible task. But, it is a task that must be tackled. Lake County”s future depends on it.
