KELSEYVILLE ? The dream of opening the Freedom House domestic violence shelter is expected to be realized just in time for Domestic Violence Month in October.
The former Venture Inn, 5350 Main Street in Kelseyville is the new home to victims of domestic violence and their children. Because of the economic downturn the site buildings constructed in 2007 became more affordable.
It is close to medical services, schools and parks.
The address of the shelter is not confidential in order that an awareness exists for community members and neighbors to call authorities should suspicious people or behaviors take place around the facility. The identities of residents of Freedom House are strictly confidential.
“This method is extremely successful in other rural areas,” Gloria Flaherty, Executive Director of Lake Family Resource Center said.
The administrative offices are on-site. Other programs including parenting courses and counseling will be offered at the location as well.
“This has been a dream for at least 10 years. Lake County magic happened and this dream has come to fruition,” Flaherty said.
Purchase of the shelter was $1.1 million.
Flaherty said the Snite Foundation, based in Chicago gave $100,000 for shelter operations and purchase. It was made possible by Dr. Bob Gardner and the Lake County Foundation. She also said tearfully that Rick Coel and his staff went above-and-beyond, as did Kelly Cox and the board of supervisors and Gary Olson.
Hilltop Recovery Services shared a donation received from Wyndham World Mark in Nice that provided much needed furnishings and even artwork.
“There are just so many people who made this happen,” she said.
For Flaherty it means that children will have a chance for a fresh start and a safe life.
Some remodeling is needed and more furnishings. Volunteers are needed. “Volunteers can work on the crisis line from their home phone or even cell phone,” Flaherty said.
On-site volunteers are needed for childcare, counseling and numerous other positions.
“We had to lay-off several staff members with the budget cuts,” she said.
To volunteer or for more information call Rae Eby-Carl, senior deputy director at 262-1611.
All volunteers must undergo a criminal background check and participate in a 40-hour training program.
