Is it time for a change?
By Capt. J. G. Everett
After reading the editorial in the Record-Bee from the district attorney regarding the Dinius case, I have to wonder just what Jon Hopkins is thinking. The district attorney managed to side step the entire issue of the cover-up. Quite frankly, the editorial made no sense at all. This is not the first case mishandled by the DA, but one in a long line and this case is a little different due to the blatant cover-up.
One has to wonder just what the DA is thinking? Does he think he can just sweep this under the carpet and say that the deputy sheriff has no responsibility at all?
I have a contact through a friend who is in law enforcement at the state level and I have heard that Lake County has become the laughing stock of the state over this case, and we are now getting nationwide coverage. Will Rogers once said, if you find yourself in a hole it would be smart to quit digging. I have been called for jury duty over 30 times in the 14 years I have lived in Lake County and I have to ask myself, could I sit in a jury box and say to a judge, without hesitation, that I could be totally unbiased. If the DA has no credibility and I cannot believe anything he says then how could I or anyone else for that matter say they could be unbiased?
I believe the district attorney has become an embarrassment to the community. Over the last year and one half I have talked to many people in our community including former supporters of the district attorney and the general consensus is “a vote of no confidence.” I believe it is time for the DA to resign. If he does not, then I believe the community should band together and start a recall.
I feel privileged to live in the greatest country in the world, a country that was built on human rights and justice for all. This is not justice, this is injustice. Does the word have no meaning in this county? In a recent article in the Record-Bee someone came to the defense of officer Perdock and said “officer Perdock is a good person” and I am sure he is and so was the person he killed. Time for a change.
