UPPER LAKE ? Twenty or so, Upper Lake cross country runners will set off from Ukiah on Friday to run their 2nd annual Relay to the Coast.
Each runner will run legs of 3, 2, or 1 miles and hand off to another for the entire 50 mile course, which finishes at the Pacific on Highway 1. Runners will then camp out in the cool coast weather and have a mini camp for runners, put on by coach John Woods and some other helpers. Flexibility, nutrition, the mental aspects of running as well as some more running on the beach will be emphasized. A mini-marathon of running videos and movies will be shown. Runners will return on Aug. 2. Any high school student not doing another fall sport is welcome to come out for cross country running and participate in this season”s relay. Students need a sports physical and proof of medical insurance to participate. The team has a very full schedule and will travel to several invitational meets this year.
Last year”s team covered the course in 7 hours and 6 minutes. Woods would like to see this year”s team break the 7-hour barrier. Team members are using this run for one of this season”s fundraisers. They will be asking friends, relatives and businesses to sponsor them on their run. A per mile pledge or a flat donation is requested.
