LAKE COUNTY ? The Lake County Chamber of Commerce is warning its members of an e-mail scam from a sender impersonating Bank of America (BofA).

The e-mail message states that for answering questions, $50 will be deposited in your bank account. “Do not do it,” the chamber advises, adding that if you receive this e-mail, you should forward it to abuse@bankofamerica.com.

BofA statistics show that small- to medium-sized companies are highly vulnerable to electronic scams and that it pays to be skeptical. Look for misspelled words, poor grammar, awkward or unprofessional writing or typos.

“Phishing” e-mails ask you to go to a fraudulent or “spoofed” Web site that also looks like BofA”s. The e-mail might even claim to suspend your account if you don”t act. According to BofA”s online fraud information center, BofA does not ask you to verify confidential information in this way.
