How astounding to read in the “Spirituality” section of the July 25 Record-Bee that people calling themselves moral Christians are more likely than atheists to support torture. I suppose I shouldn”t be surprised, since the Bible makes it clear that the “conservative” religious authorities of Jesus” day also supported torturing him.
Jesus would surely weep to hear about “Christianity”s just-war tradition” described in the article. You can bet that the Romans believed that their war against the Israelites was “just.”
And the willingness of so-called “evangelists” to throw out the Golden Rule by saying “It depends” shows the true colors of these preachers. As the article notes, “White evangelical support for torture is more likely rooted in their strong allegiance to the Republican Party.”
“Woe, ye hypocrites.”
