As clinical coordinator for the Family Birth Center at Sutter Lakeside Hospital, I would like to respond to the letter to the editor titled “Read the instructions for safety” printed on July 29.
Although I am encouraged by the passion of this writer and excited with her efforts to increase the safety of our children, I would like respond to her statement that “the nurse that escorts you out to your car when you take your baby home is not a certified child passenger safety technician.”
I am proud to say that Sutter Lakeside Hospital has employed four certified child passenger safety technicians since 2006. These dedicated professionals are certified by Safe Kids Worldwide in cooperation with the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration. They provide written and verbal instruction on the most current vehicle safety codes, assist parents in securely fitting their baby into the seat and car and are available to all of our new parents upon discharge, before they transport their new baby home. In fact, we encourage new parents to call after discharge for questions and spot checks as their baby grows.
At Sutter Lakeside Hospital we are committed not only to providing the best birthing experience and care but to ensuring the health and safety of our families as they begin their life together.
