Hats off to the Lakeport Kiwanis for being among the first of our local non-profit organizations to seek alternatives to fireworks sales as a fundraising endeavor. Before my retirement, I was for nearly 30 years an administrator for a non-profit organization in Sonoma County. During that time I was pleased that our agency consistently refused to endanger the community and our firefighters by selling the so-called “safe and sane” fireworks. This coming Saturday, August 8the Lakeport Kiwanis and the Lakeport Volunteer Firefighters will hold a pancake breakfast at the Lakeport Fire Station to generate funds for youth activities. Our family is buying tickets and I hope we will be joined by many others. The success of the event will not only support the excellent Kiwanis programs, but will help demonstrate to local non-profits that there are other, more positive alternatives to selling fireworks as a means of funding their activities.
