There has been a great deal of discussion at recent city council meetings and within public forums about the sale of safe and sane fireworks. This summer the city council decided to ban the sale of safe and sane fireworks and, with that decision, four non-profit organizations lost one of their main sources of funding. This letter is not meant to discuss that decision any further but instead to recognize the efforts of local businesses and organizations that have stepped up to help these non-profits.
Bruno”s Shop Smart and the Rotary Club hosted a wine-tasting event at Bruno”s that gave each organization a good start in their efforts to recoup some of the funds lost with the fireworks ban. Piedmont Lumber hosted a barbecue that brought in additional funds for the Lake County Channel Cats. Loeb”s Ink Spot has donated countless flyers for the advertisement of different events. Now ? the Kiwanis Club and the Lakeport Fire Department have teamed up to host a pancake breakfast this Saturday, Aug. 8, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Lakeport firehouse with the hope of bringing in more funds for the Lake County Channel Cats and the Miss Lake County Pageant.
All of these efforts are a reminder of what makes Lake County such a wonderful community in which to live. We are looking ahead and doing, as the city council suggested, what we can to find alternative fundraisers to help support these organizations.
The Miss Lake County Pageant has had to postpone its pageant until November due to lack of funds. The Lake County Channel Cats are responsible for one third of operational costs for the city pool and are on the verge of having to raise membership fees to cover costs.
This letter is an open plea to all Lake County residents to please attend this breakfast on Saturday. You will receive a delicious meal, served by local swimmers and pageant participants and prepared by the Kiwanis Club. You will even get to consume this meal in our city firehouse.
